she starts each morning dusted and twisted
in the sugar of hope
the sweetness
puckering her lips
till her eyes meet a sky too cloud filled to look like a sky

it’s here
that she emerges
worried for the wolf, and willing
to listen for snow making a song along the lake front

and she pulls the wind to her because this is all she can do with the wind
